  Modern Masters: From Corot to Kandinsky is on view at the Taft Museum of Art in Cincinnati through October 28. The blockbuster exhibition includes 52 rarely seen works by modern masters including Magritte, Chagall, Dalí, Gauguin and Picasso. For more information call 513/241-0343.

Arts of Africa, an exhibition including artifacts from West, South and East Africa, will be on view at the Wayne Center for the Arts August 16­October 26. The center is seeking artifacts from North Africa for the exhibition. School tours are available. For more information call 330/264-9314.

The 35th Labor Day Arts Festival will take place Monday September 3 in Upper Arlington, Columbus. Presented by the Upper Arlington Arts Commission, the festival will include local music, activities for children and works by 190 artisans in painting, ceramics, jewelry, photography and more. Noteworthy.

  The Cleveland Chamber Symphony was recently honored with an Award for Adventurous Programming by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers and the American Symphony Orchestra League. The Awards for Adventurous Programming, first presented by ASCAP in 1959, recognize American orchestras whose programs demonstrate a strong commitment to the works of 20th century composers.

Names in the News

Suzanne Jaffe has been named executive director of the Thurber House in Columbus. She replaces founding director Donn Vickers, who retired in May. Previously, Jaffe was vice president and editor in chief of Random House Value Publishing and had been in the publishing business for 26 years. Jaffe is a published author of more than 10 works of fiction and nonfiction, has taught creative writing courses and has participated in publishing seminars and writing conferences.

The Power of Arts Assessment in Teaching and Learning, a valuable resource for educators and artists, is now available. The guide is designed to help make learning in the arts more engaging, relevant and individualized. It was developed through the Ohio Arts Education Assessment Project, a consortium effort of the Ohio Arts Council, the Ohio Alliance for Arts Education and the Ohio Department of Education.
