  Top Brass, a contemporary chamber ensemble of five classically trained virtuosos, will webcast the premiere of Old Wine, New Bottles, a multi-movement chamber work by distinguished American composer David N. Baker, at 8 p.m. July 9. Funded in part by the Ohio Arts Council, this groundbreaking performance will be available worldwide to anyone with Internet access. The Springfield Symphony Orchestra will host Lunch on the Plaza, a series of free concerts on City Hall Plaza in downtown Springfield. Concerts will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on July 9, July 16 and July 23. For more information call 937/325-8100.

Beck Center for the Arts presents A Chorus Line July 9 through August 8. The musical chronicles the dreams of 30 hopeful dancers and singers as they compete for coveted spots in a new Broadway show. For ticket information call 216/521-2540.

Frank Duveneck, a Cincinnati native and one of the most influential American expatriate realist painters of the 19th century, will be the subject of a major exhibition at The Taft Museum July 16 through October 17. Frank Duveneck (1848-1919): Virtuoso of the Brush focuses on the leading figure and guiding spirit of the Munich School in the 1870s and 1880s. During that time American artists in Munich experimented with a new style of realism featuring dashing brushwork of quickly applied blocks of color. Young boys or older men from working class neighborhoods were among the artists' favorite subjects. For more information call 513/241-0343.

  Representative Jack FordRepresentative Jack Ford of Toledo has been appointed to the Ohio Arts Council Board. A social worker and instructor at the University of Toledo, he represents the 49th District and is Minority Leader of the Ohio House of Representatives.

 

 

Franz Wesler-Möst has been appointed to succeed Christopher von Dohnanyi as The Cleveland Orchestra's seventh music director. Wesler-Möst has been music director of the Zurich Opera since 1995 and has appeared as guest conductor with several American orchestras, including The Cleveland Orchestra. He will begin conducting fulltime in September 2002.

  Ohio Arts Council Offers Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Workshops

The Ohio Arts Council is presenting a series of workshops about its Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program and application form. Master artists will present demonstrations at each workshop and will discuss their experiences with the apprenticeship program. The workshops are free. Lunch and beverages will be provided.

Workshops will be from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the following sites:
Cleveland, Saturday, July 17; International Services Center, Suite 200,
1836 Euclid Avenue. Jackson, Saturday July 24; Markay Cultural Center, 269 Main Street.
Columbus, Saturday, July 31; Ohio Arts Council, 727 East Main Street.
