In creating healthy communities, the arts can educate people on critical topics. Creative expression through the arts can channel young people's energy in positive directions and be an asset in building healthy, happy citizens. The arts provide opportunities for volunteering and community service. Our communities flourish as dedicated individuals give their time and talents in the arts. The arts are an important component in rounding out our society and making Ohio an exciting, enjoyable place to live. The arts allow us to explore our past in exciting ways. During our Bicentennial celebration we can learn about our past through paintings, music, dance and theater, then leave a legacy for future generations by creating new works and visions.

ArtsOhio The Ohio Arts Council also is interested in positive youth development. Please talk about this theme of yours and discuss your hopes for Ohio's children.
Mrs. Taft We need to make children our number one priority, so our future will be bright. As First Lady I hope to encourage communities to stay focused on keeping young people their number one priority. We need to promote their healthy development so we can have a future filled with people who are responsible, caring, capable, resilient, life-long learners.

ArtsOhio You have a personal interest in the arts and have made art in the past. Please share your artistic experiences with us.
Mrs. Taft I started college as a fine arts major because I enjoyed art classes in high school. Although I changed my major, I have always been involved in crafts. I have quilted, tatted, smocked, woven baskets, blown glass, done macrami, made wooden toys, made paper and potpourri, dried flowers and have done cross stitching and needlepoint. I have done a little bit of many crafts because I enjoy the creative process so much.

Noteworthy

On July 1, Governor Bob Taft approved the Ohio Arts Council budget for fiscal years 2000 and 2001 at $32,736,291. That is an 11-percent increase in the two-year OAC budget and the highest appropriation ever received by the state arts agency.

The Cleveland Film Society is moving from Playhouse Square to Ohio City's Historic Market Square District. The organization's new address will be 2510 Market Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44113. It will be in the Gehring Building, a recently renovated Italianate structure built in the 1870s by the family that operated the Gehring Brewery.
