OHIO SCHOOL HONORED FOR ARTS EDUCATION PROGRAM

Mills Lawn Elementary School in Yellow Springs was one of only two schools in the country recently recognized nationally for arts programming. The staff, students and community of Mills Lawn received an arts education award from the National Blue Ribbon Schools Excellence in Education Committee. "We gained this distinction because of our deep belief in the arts as a basic part of any child's education," said Dan Mecoli, Mills Lawn principal. "Our curriculum provides children with a rich array of opportunities in the arts." At Mills Lawn the arts are taught in conjunction with other core disciplines. Mecoli stressed the importance of the school's partnership with the Ohio Arts Council and its Arts in Education Program.

"The OAC's artist in residence program has enabled us to expand our curriculum by offering children and teachers high quality, authentic arts experiences," Mecoli said. "The opportunity to explore the arts in depth with talented, professional artists has served as a springboard to our success." The school was honored October 29 at the Washington Hilton in the District of Columbia, where President Clinton spoke on the importance of arts programming in schools.
