David L. Deming, Dean of the
College of Fine Arts at the University of Texas, has been named president of the Cleveland Institute of Art. Deming, a Lakewood, Ohio,
native and a graduate of the Institute, will succeed Robert A. Mayer who retired last
year. Canton Symphony Orchestra Director Gerhardt Zimmermann has won the National Easter Seal Society Johanna Cooke Plaut Community Leadership Award. Zimmermann, who uses a full-length brace on his left leg, was chosen for his artistic and community leadership in three states. |
The Akron Art Museum has received a $150,000 grant from the Ameritech Technology Program for Arts & Cultural Organizations to fund a project that will allow users of University of Akron libraries to access images from the museums collection from a library catalog. Two hundred of the museums most important works will be digitized. |

As part of Traditional Arts of Africa Month at Wayne Center for the Arts in Wooster, the exhibition Recent Paintings by Tyrone Geter runs through February 13. The Ohio River Border Initiative Arts Network is an online joint project of the Ohio Arts Council and the West Virginia Commission of the Arts. It unites artists, organizations and community leaders across state lines by providing an Internet bulletin board where individuals can get feedback on ideas, a calendar of events, a comprehensive database of potential partners, presenters and performers in the region, and information about grants for programs that involve artists, audiences and communities on both sides of the Ohio River.
