OAC Announces Governor's Awards Recipients

The Ohio Arts Council and Ohio Citizens for the Arts have announced 10 winners of the 1998 Governor's Awards for the Arts in Ohio. Winners were selected in seven categories from 81 nominations. Awards will be presented at an Arts Day luncheon honoring award recipients and Ohio's legislators, April 1, 11:30 am to 2 p.m. in the Governor's Ballroom of the Hyatt on Capitol Square in Columbus. Winners will receive an original work by an Ohio artist.

Awards categories and recipients are: Arts Administration, Jefferson James, Contemporary Dance Theatre, Cincinnati; Arts in Education, Cleveland Opera on Tour; Arts Outreach - Established Organization, Professional Flair/Cleveland Ballet Dancing Wheels, Mary Verdi-Fletcher; Arts Outreach - Emerging Organization, Young Artists at Work Program, Arts Commission of Greater Toledo; Arts Patron, Louise Dieterle Nippert, Cincinnati; Business Support of the Arts - Regional, First National Bank of Southwestern Ohio, Hamilton; Business Support of the Arts - Statewide, GTE; Individual Artist, Dallas Wiebe, Cincinnati; Partnerships in the Arts, WWCD 101.1 FM, Columbus.

The Cincinnati May Festival Chorus will receive the Irma Lazarus Award, which honors the memory of a woman who made countless contributions as an arts patron, advocate and leader in the development of state funding for the arts in Ohio. The award goes to organizations or artists who have helped shape public support for the arts through their work as advocates and who have brought statewide, national and international recognition to Ohio through sustained dedication to artistic excellence. The Irma Lazarus Award is presented at the discretion of the Ohio Arts Council Board.

Members of the Ohio Arts Council Board's 1998 Governor's Award Selection Committee were Charles Anness of Cincinnati, chairperson, Alex Machaskee of Cleveland, Barbara S. Robinson of Cleveland, Georgia Welles of Bowling Green, Dora Wilson of Athens and Mary T. Wolfe of Perrysburg. The awards were established in 1971 to recognize outstanding contributions to the arts by organizations and individuals throughout the state. This year the awards will be photographs by Elise Mitchell Sanford of Athens, a winner of an Ohio Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowship.
