ARTISTS ATTEND WORK CENTER

With assistance from the Ohio Arts Council, two Ohio artists developed and displayed their skills this summer at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Painter and mixed media artist Sean Foley of Columbus and writer/playwright Aubrey Wertheim from Oberlin were eligible to apply for residencies at the nationally known arts center because the OAC gave them Individual Artist Fellowships in 1996.

Foley spent his three-month residency developing two-dimensional paintings and mixed media pieces. He also enrolled in a printmaking class taught by Sidney Hurwitz, nationally exhibited printmaker and former director of the School of Visual Arts at Boston University. In August Foley presented a solo exhibition of paintings and drawings created over the summer at the center's Hudson D. Walker Gallery.

Wertheim completed The Genuine Article, a one-person show based on the life of Fanny Fern, America's first woman columnist. He also produced Make Way for Dyklings, a comedic play, at the center in July and August. Wertheim studied screen writing with Pat Cooper, director of creative affairs at Paramount Pictures and a professor of film at New York University's film school.

Foley and Wertheim are the third pair of artists to participate in the summer residency program sponsored by the Ohio Arts Council. Visual artists Walter Zurko, Wooster, and Karen Snouffer, Shaker Heights, and writers Steve Abbott, Columbus, and Steven Haven, Ashland, also have attended the Work Center.
