What:  The Governor's Awards for the Arts in Ohio is a statewide program that showcases and celebrates Ohio artists, arts organizations, arts patrons, and business support of the arts. Winners are selected in seven categories: Arts Administration, Arts Education, Arts Patron, Business Support of the Arts (small and large), Community Development and Participation, Individual Artist, and Irma Lazarus. A selection committee made up of Ohio Arts Council board members and three individuals selected by Ohio Citizens for the Arts chooses the winners. The program is presented by the Ohio Arts Council and the Ohio Citizens for the Arts Foundation. Award winners are presented with an original work of art by an Ohio artist at a luncheon ceremony.

History:  Since its beginning in 1971, the Governor's Awards for the Arts in Ohio has recognized individuals and organizations who have been vital to the growth and development of Ohio's cultural resources. The Governor's Awards for the Arts in Ohio & Arts Day Luncheon evolved from the Ohio Arts Council's Governor's Awards for the Arts ceremony and Ohio Arts Day, coordinated by Ohio Citizens for the Arts Foundation, a nonprofit arts advocacy organization.

Today:  Ohio is a state with a wealth of individual artists, individuals, and institutions that are supportive of the arts; for that reason, the process is highly competitive. The primary mission of the Governor's Awards for the Arts in Ohio is to increase public awareness of the economic, educational, and cultural value of the arts in our state. More than 800 artists, legislators, business leaders, arts managers, board members, and patrons from every corner of the state attend the luncheon ceremony. The awards presentation is typically presided over by Ohio's First Lady, the President of the Ohio Senate, and the Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives. Six winners from across Ohio are presented with a one-of-a-kind award, created by an Ohio artist. During Arts Day, arts advocates and students visit their state legislators to express the importance of the arts in their daily lives. It serves as an opportunity to thank the legislature for its investment in the arts and to express how that investment translates into artistic excellence in Ohio. A children's book with an arts theme also is given to each legislator.

When/Where:  The Governor's Awards for the Arts in Ohio is held in the spring each year. The 2016 event will be held Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at noon in downtown Columbus.

How:  Nomination forms and letters of support for the 2016 awards open September 1, 2015 and will be accepted online through Friday, October 16, 2015 at midnight. For Arts Day sponsorship information please contact the Ohio Citizens for the Arts Foundation at 614/221-4064.

Who:  The Ohio Arts Council, a state agency established in 1965, funds and supports quality arts experiences to strengthen Ohio communities culturally, educationally, and economically.

The Ohio Citizens for the Arts, established in 1976 as the Ohio Citizens Committee for the Arts, is a volunteer, nonprofit grass roots organization working to increase public support for the arts in Ohio. Through the efforts of hundreds of individuals and arts and education organizations, Ohio Citizens for the Arts advocates on behalf of the Ohio Arts Council and the arts throughout the state.
