Against the Grain: Modernism in the Midwest

The Ohio Arts Council's Riffe Gallery will present Against the Grain: Modernism in the Midwest from November 4, 2010 - January 9, 2011. Curated by Christine Fowler Shearer, Against the Grain: Modernism in the Midwest includes approximately 65 paintings produced between 1900 and 1950. These paintings explore the similarities and differences in the development of Modernism by artists who were born in, studied, or worked in Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin.

Artists in the show include: Gertrude Abercrombie, Ivan Albright, Charles Burchfield, Manierre Dawson, Clara Deike, Frances Foy, Victor Higgins, Alice Schille, William Sommer and William Zorach.

Join the Riffe Gallery for the opening of Against the Grain on Thursday, November 4 from 5 to 7 p.m. Curator Christine Fowler Shearer will lead a tour of the exhibition on Friday, November 5 from noon to 1 p.m.

A full-color, 122 page exhibition catalogue produced by the Massillon Museum is available at the Riffe Gallery for $25.00. We accept checks or cash only.

Against the Grain: Modernism in the Midwest is presented by the Riffe Gallery with support from the Ohio Building Authority, and media support from CD101, CityScene, Ohio Magazine, Time Warner Cable and 90.5 WCBE. The exhibition was originally produced by the Massillon Museum in Massillon, Ohio, with financial support from the National Endowment for the Arts' American Masterpieces: Three Centuries of Artistic Genius initiative, the Ohio Arts Council and ArtsinStark.

The Ohio Arts Council’s Riffe Gallery is located in the Vern Riffe Center for Government and the Arts, 77 S. High St., Columbus, OH. Admission is free. Gallery hours are Tuesday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Wednesday and Friday, 10 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., Thursday, 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. and Saturday, and Sunday, noon-4 p.m. Closed Mondays and Thursday Nov. 11, Thursday Nov. 25, Friday Dec. 24, Saturday Dec 25, Friday, Dec. 31 and Saturday, Jan. 1.
