From the submissions a group of semi-finalists will be selected to visit the campus, meet with the committee (comprised of KSU faculty and staff), and visit the artwork site locations to create a site-specific art work proposal. Current KSU employees and their spouses are not eligible to apply for this commission. Alumni and former KSU faculty, and associates, are encouraged to apply and should indicate their past relationship to KSU in their application materials. Students currently enrolled in any degree-granting program are not eligible to apply.

Project Background and
Building History:
The renovation of KSU's Taylor Hall provided the opportunity to house together the School of Visual Communication Design (VCD) and Communication Studies. The historic Taylor Hall building's interior has been transformed to become the center for these dynamic programs. The new building features a signature gallery, photo and design studios, updated classrooms and a centralized student advising space. Kent State University's College of Communication and Information is the academic home to five innovative, professional schools whose work spans the disciplines of communication, information and technology. 2017 marked the 15th anniversary of the college, the 85th anniversary of the School of Communication Studies, the 80th anniversary of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, the 5th anniversary of the Interdisciplinary School of Digital Sciences, and the 50th anniversary of the School of Visual Communication Design.

Mission of School or Site:  The mission of the School of Visual Communication Design is to provide a superior undergraduate and graduate education in the study and practice of visual communication design that complements University studies in the liberal arts, humanities, and sciences. Uniquely positioned within the College of Communication and Information, the School encourages cross-disciplinary studies to meet the challenges of an evolving global marketplace. The teaching philosophy and rigorous curricula promote innovative thinking in the development of design processes, communication strategies, and emerging technologies. A strong commitment to creative activity and research means creating and maintaining a significant intellectual environment and achieving broader commitments to the advancement of knowledge and service to the public.
Rooted in a liberal arts philosophy, the School of Communication Studies prepares students with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to succeed in a technological, multicultural, and global environment. The school's mission is to teach students to think analytically, reason critically, communicate effectively, and lead responsibly, striving to develop communicators who are adaptive and ethical citizens who will thrive in the workplace, in the community, and in careers in government, business, non-profit, education, and community advocacy.

Artistic Goals of the
Commissioned Piece:
The commissioned work should be reflective of the departments which are housed in Taylor Hall. Two interior wall locations have been identified for the commissioned work. Both walls are located at either end of a multi-purpose room located on the second floor, main entry level to the building. The multi-purpose room can be divided by a moveable wall to separate the room into two separate spaces. The commissioned artwork should function as two separate pieces when the room is divided, and both pieces should relate and/or complement each other when the room functions as one space.

Practical Considerations:  The multi-purpose room is used for a variety of events including lectures, classes, receptions, and other social gatherings. The two walls identified for the location of the artwork are easily accessible to physical contact. Any proposed artwork should be durable, and should not project significantly into the space. The proposed artwork should avoid using any materials or components that would create movement or sound that may be disruptive in the space.
